The Differences Between the Holistic Dentistry & Traditional Dentistry
People frequently ask me a question “What are the differences between a Holistic Dentistry and Traditional Dentistry?” I am a holistic dentist, who is also a former traditional dentist as well as the dental school professor. I don’t think it is good to differentiate between the holistic group and the traditional group. Though, both of them pertain to dental related issues, they have few distinct differences regarding the dentist and dental practices. Every dentist is different at their own place.
Differences between the holistic dentist & traditional dentist
The differences between my (Doctor Vinograd's) dentistry / holistic dentistry and traditional dentistry are not necessarily topical in nature. The topical differences are easy to understand and easy to pinpoint.
The true difference between the holistic dentistry and traditional dentistry is philosophical. The traditional dentistry is the practice of treating the symptoms in teeth and gums. They also attempt to prevent such problems from reoccurring. The Holistic dentistry is the practice of treating the underlying problems that cause symptoms in the mouth. They also attempt to eliminate those problems by preventing the adverse effect on your overall health.
The significant differences
Before going to the depth of the differences, I think it is important to know, what it really means with the word “Holistic”. The word “Holistic” comes from the word “Wholistic” which means is “the whole”. It not only reflects the practices and techniques that are used by the dentist. It means the overall philosophy of the role of oral care.
Not all dentists give much importance to the overall health of an individual while they are performing the treatment. They are not trained in the long term effects of what dentistry does to the whole body. That’s why the field of holistic dentistry was formed. Their studies conclude a link between gum diseases and other health related issues such as heart, diabetes and pregnancies.
A holistic dentist is a dentist who dentistry that is good for the teeth, gums as well as the whole body.
There are some dentists who used to call themselves holistic. But, not all of them are holistic dentists. They called themselves holistic dentists as they don’t place any mercury fillings. But, what actually is that the only difference between them is not about mercury fillings. There are also other differences. The ‘holistic’ that is also known as ‘wholistic’ also performs other teeth and gums related diseases that involve face, head, neck as well as the whole body. Our vision was to find out the nuts and bolts of the differences between this dentistry segmentation.
At the Center for Natural Dentistry, we have given much more emphasis on the natural or holistic approach to dentistry. We have discussed about the real meaning of these two words.
How do you know when you have to go to which one?
As the differences are about the philosophical vision, how do you find out the right dentist for you? Of course, find out the one whose philosophies match your own. Ask a few good questions such as “How do you determine which type of filling is right for me?” Or “If I get cavities in any area of my mouth, then tell me why it happens?”
If you want to find out a real holistic dentist, their answers will revolve around your entire body. The holistic dentist will discuss about the role of oral health which also involve the overall health. On the other hand, if you want to find out a dentist, their answers will revolve around the typical symptoms. The traditional dentist will discuss about the benefits and the cost such as insurance coverage.
You have the right to ask questions to determine who are suitable for your oral problem. You should never have any implicitly about your dentist. Though, most of the dentists have the best interest to look at you, but sometimes not both of them have the same best interest in the alternative solutions. So, ask questions to find out your best dental adviser. It’s all about your decision as the health is yours.
