Bio
Bob Hofmann retired from Bell Laboratories/Lucent Technologies after 44 years of service. At Bell Labs, he was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff based in Naperville, Illinois. Bob has a BSEE degree from the University of Florida and an MSEE degree from New York University. He joined Bell Laboratories in 1957 and has been concerned with electromagnetic compatibility issues since 1968. He served as chairman of the Lucent Corporate EMC committee for 19 years prior to his retirement. In that role, he acted to coordinate EMC efforts across the many Lucent locations throughout the world.
He is currently working as an EMC consultant to the University of Wisconsin - Madison on electromagnetic compatibility issues for the South Pole Ice Cube Neutrino Detector project.
Bob is a Past President of the IEEE EMC Society and is currently serving as treasurer of the 2005 IEEE EMC Symposium committee. He is a Life Member of the IEEE EMC Society and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He received the Laurence G. Cumming award from the IEEE EMC Society in 1994 and has received numerous other awards.
Bob represented Lucent and served as chairman of the Information Technologies Industries Council (ITIC), (formerly CBEMA-Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers Association) TC-5 EMC Committee from 1990 to 1999. He also represented Lucent and served as vice-chairman of the ECMA (formerly European Computer Manufacturers Association) TC-20 EMC Committee. He is a NARTE registered engineer.
Bob represented Lucent on the ANSI C63 EMC Committee and continues to serve as a member of several ANSI C63 committees, subcommittees, and working groups. He led the 1987 and 1999 revisions of ANSI/IEEE C63.12 on Electromagnetic Compatibility Limits, and was an active member of the editing committee for the 1991, 1992, 2001, and 2003 revisions of C63.4 on Methods of Measurement of Emissions. He has authored and presented a number of papers on EMC standards and testing in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and has chaired several sessions on International EMC standards and EMC testing at various EMC symposia. His work on EMC standards has concentrated on developing standards that are easy to implement, and that have wording that is unambiguous to the reader. Bob has taught a number of courses on EMC measurements and is one of the reviewers of papers submitted for presentation at the IEEE EMC Symposia. He is also a reviewer of questions used in NARTE engineer and technician certification.
For a change from EMC, Bob likes to climb 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado, ski the sides of the same mountains in winter, bike the flat land of Illinois, and run 10 kilometer races.
