Intern, Hawaiian Electric Company Honolulu, HI
I was very excited to get my first engineering job and I'm very glad that it was in Hawaii. The Hawaiian Electric Company and its subsidaries provide reliable electricity to 95% of Hawaii's residents. For the first time in 19 years I can finally answer the biggest question in my mind, "What do engineers do?".

I got a chance to see what engineers do on a day to day basis. I worked for the Engineering department, Substation, Protection, & Telecommunication division. My main project was to redesigned the division's intranet website. I also assisted other engineers in revising and editing drawings, requesting bids from manufacturers, research reliability council standards, and investigate radio frequency interference sites.
Webmaster, Pyxel Honolulu, HI
I designed and developed a website for the State of Hawaii FIRST Robotics Regional. FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". It is a international high school robotics competition. Hawaii was made a FIRST Regional site in 2007 with the help from NASA and existing local FIRST teams. FIRST in Hawaii

Pyxel is my self-owned business for graphic design and web development.
Teacher, Punahou School Honolulu, HI
After working for Punahou School for 3 summers as a teacher's aid, I was promoted to a teacher. I got a chance to create lesson plans, supervise students, and provide technical and non-technical assistance to other teachers.
Intern, University of Hawaii at Manoa Honolulu, HI
My first internship was at the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Engineering. I got a chance to work with graduate students designing an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This ROV was designed to explore small, tight areas. The body of the ROV was made from a flashlight casing and the motors were taken from a toy submarine.

My job was to help design a graphic user interface (GUI) for the ROV controls. This GUI would display a video feed from the ROV as well as all the controls and settings. I also helped design the project's webpage. At the end of the internship I was the project's student spokesperson and gave a presentation about the mini ROV project.
Teacher's Aid, Punahou School Honolulu, HI
My first job ever was during the summer of 2004. I was teacher's aid for a robotics class at Punahou School. This robotics class called "Robolab" exposed middle school students to the new facinating world of robotics. Students got lots of hands-on experience designing, building, and programming LEGO robots to perform tasks like finding its way through a maze, following a line, and navigating with touch sensors.

For three summers I was a teacher's aid for Robolab 5th-6th grade, Robolab 7th-8th grade, and VEX Robotics 7th-8th grade. I provided technical design and programming support for students as well as other teachers. It was a great experience and I'm very glad to have worked with everyone at Punahou.
IIT Formula HybridOngoing
The ACE Formula Hybrid project at Illinois Tech gives students hands-on experience designing and fabricating electrical and mechanical automotive systems. I am part of the Control sub-team on the IIT Formula Hybrid team. The Control sub-team designs the car's overall control strategy.
IIT Snapshot WebsiteOngoing
Snapshot is a new club at IIT focused towards photography. The website can be found here.
iPhone IIT Information AppOn Hold
After Apple anounced its iPhone Developer University program I wanted IIT to adopt the program. An app that I wanted to work on would be something like Stanford's iApps. These apps are geared towards students and faculty with iPhone and iPod Touches. It would allow them to access important information about courses, contacts, and finances.
IIT Personal WebsiteOngoing
This project is the site you are on now. For the longest time I wanted to make my own personal website but I never got to it. Now it is up and running and I'll do my best to keep it as up-to-date as possible. This project was started while I was interning at the Hawaiian Electric Company. Working for them taught me a lot about how to code better webpages.
iPhone Shopping List AppOn Hold
Ever since the iPhone SDK was released I've always wanted to make an application for the iPhone. The iPhone is truly a revolutionary device and I want to create apps that take advantage of its touch-screen interface. With the launch of the App Store, I get to see what other developers created and get ideas for future applications.
IIT Robotics Team WebsiteComplete
In my first year in college, I joined the IIT Robotics Team. My main job was to redesign the club's website. The team wanted a design that was more modern so I based it off of a "glass" theme. The website can be found at http://www.iit.edu/~robotics
McKinley 2007 Robotics Team WebsiteComplete
This was my first attempt at making a full website from beginning to end. In previous years I was a programmer for the robotics team but my in senior year in high school, I wanted to try something completely different. Something that didn't have to do with the robot. I volunteered to remake the McKinley Robotics Team's website - I mean a complete overhaul.

The final product is this. The website won 3 awards, Website Excellence Award, Silicon Valley Regional Best Website Award, and 2007 National Best Website Award. This website was a team effort and it wouldn't be what it is without everyone's help.

Formula Hybrid PCB13 Photos
These are my very first PCB (printed circuit board) designs. After 5 months of hard work I finally finished the designs for our Main Controller and a special circuit, the Motor Control PCB. The Main Controller acts as the master of the entire control system of the car. It's primary job is to control the speed of the car based on inputs from the driver (the accelerator pedal). Using Two-Wire Interface, it can talk to all of the other systems of the car such as the battery, low voltage, and engine systems.

The Motor Control PCB is a special circuit I designed to control all of the motors on our car. The micro-controllers send data to it via Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) communication. This data is sent through digital optocouplers then to a digtal to analog converter (DAC) that converts the serial data into a voltage ranging from 0 to 5 volts. This voltage is fed into our specialized Sigma Motor Drives and controls the speed of the car.

Formula Hybrid Prototype11 Photos
The Formula Hybrid team at IIT creates a hybrid race car from scratch at competes against other universities in a national competition. I am on the Control Systems subteam who is in charge of the general control strategy of the car. We use Atmel AVR 8-bit micro-controllers to control different sections of the car such as our custom made battery pack, the low voltage system, the dashboard, and the driver system. By using micro-controllers we can increase the efficiency of the car by using voltage, current, speed, and temperature sensors as inputs.

These first prototypes are used to familiarize the new Control Systems subteam with micro-controllers and to get the very basic functions to work. Some of these include PWM signal generation, analog to digital convertions, two-wire interface communication, and LCD control.

Every engineering department at IIT has a class called "Introduction to the Profession". This ITP class gets students started off in the their field of study in their freshman year. The Electrical and Computer Engineering department's ITP class is ECE 100. ECE 100 is a robotics course that give students and introduction to the engineering design process.

The class focused on designing automonous LEGO robots. The robot gets its instructions from an onboard microcomputer called a Handyboard. Touch and light sensors can be attached to the Handyboard to help with tasks like navigating a maze or following a line.
