Tourist maps
of the West (78k) and East
(61k) sides of Puerto
Rico will help you locate places of interest. The white sand beaches and
coral reefs are mainly on the north coast. The mountains run the length of the
center rising 4,000 ft. at their highest point. The Arecibo Observatory is in the mountains south of the
city. The driest area is the south west section. Boqueron Beach is on the
southwest coast and Luquillo Beach is on the northeast coast near the town of
Fajardo. The El Yunque rain
forest and its waterfalls are just south of Luquillo. Large waves crash the
lava cliffs at Isabela and roll in near Rincon. The eastern islands, with their
ports and beautiful beaches are 6 and 25 miles off shore from Fajardo. The
Island's weather is
usually mild year round although major hurricanes strike the
island every several years.
Use the West (149k) and East (151k) roadmaps to find major roads pointing you in
the right direction. Using the toll roads and freeways, you can cover distances
quickly: less than 2hr . to Ponce, less than 1hr. to Fajardo, and 1hr. to
Arecibo from San Juan (non-rush hour). Two-lane highways between major towns
travel at half that average speed and the good mountain roads can be difficult
at 30 mph. Its a good investment to buy ($2.95) a Gousha
roadmap of the Island. Roads are not always well marked.
