Vacancies and Scholarships

We are striving to provide excellent environment for research and encourage those who would like to carry out quality research as a post-doctoral researcher or a PhD student to get in touch with us. We are also very happy to host academic visitors and Fellowships. The subject can be anything in control, power electronics and power systems, e.g. robust control, nonlinear systems, power electronics, renewable energy, smart grids, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, automotive electronics, process control, mechatronics, flight control etc.

Since I have taken up the Max McGraw Endowed Chair Professor in Energy and Power Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago, I have stopped taking any new researchers at University of Sheffield, all new visitors, postdocs, PhD students will be based at IIT. 

If you have an exceptionally excellent case for PhD study, then please get in touch with us and highlight why we should take you on board. 

Interns/visitors: We are very happy to host those with funding for six months or more but normally we are not able to provide funding for short-term interns.

Professor Zhong receives a £459K grant from EPSRC to Develop Fundamental Theory and Enabling Technologies for Parallel Operation of Inverters to Facilitate Large-scale Utilisation of Renewable Energy, with the support of Rolls-Royce, National Grid, Alstom, Texas Instruments Ltd, Turbo Power Systems, Power Systems Warehouse Ltd, Yokogawa Measurement Technologies Ltd etc.

Mr Long Nguyen passes his PhD viva. Congratulations to him. He will continue as a postdoctoral researcher to work on EV charging systems with grid support for six months and then join add2 Ltd, UK.

Professor Zhong receives a £180K EPSRC grant to foster long-term collaboration with leading control and power electronics experts in the USA under the International Collaboration Sabbatical scheme. He is going to visit Professor Miroslav Krstic, Director of the Cymer Center for Control Systems and Dynamics at University of California, San Diego and.Professor Fred Lee, the Founder and Director of the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES), Virginia Tech for six months, respectively.. He will also visit other leading research centres in control and power electronics in US and Canada.

Professor Zhong is awarded a £126,530 grant for "Charging Systems with Grid Support for Electric Vehicles" under the EPSRC KTA scheme.

Dr Zhong is appointed as a Professor of Control Engineering to lead the Control and Reliability Group at the Dept of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Loughborough University.

Dr Zhong is elected to a Fellow of IET.
Funding secured for "Further Development of the Synchronverter Technology to Increase its Technology-Readiness Level" from EPSRC KTA.
A KTP partnership with Power System Warehouse Ltd, with support from TSB and EPSRC, is established.
The synchronverter technology is awarded Highly Commended at the IET Innovation Awards 2009.
