This lesson was created as a part of the SMART website and is hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology

INTRODUCTION:  Science fair project is a performance assessment utilizing scientific experimentation, which  challenges the student to develop and communicate new science ideas through writing, experimental procedure, and orally.

The Scientific Method is a seven step plan that establishes the guidelines for the project. It is the method that allows scientist use an orderly and acceptable way to prove or disprove theories.

PURPOSE:  To meet the needs of students of grades 4-8 aiding in the preparation of  a  Science Fair Project a required assignment to meet approximately more  than 50% of student's  grade for 2nd marking period. To develop and enhance the student's awareness through scientific experimentation.

GRADES:  4-8

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

STEPS

  1. PURPOSE:  Identifies a problem, states what the experimenter wants to find out

  2. HYPOTHESIS:  Predicts the answer to the problem

  3. MATERIALS:  Lists the materials used in the experiment

  4. PROCEDURES:  Describe the steps of the experiments in chronological order

  5. RESULTS:  Describes what happened as a result of the experiment; displays the data in the form of tables, charts, or graphs

  6. CONCLUSIONS:  State what was learned as a result of the experiment

TIPS:    EVERY SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT SHOULD CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:

               1.  DISPLAY

                2.  INVESTIGATION, DEMONSTRATION, OR MODEL

                3.  THE EXPERIMENT  WRITE-UP AND RESEARCH REPORT

                                                                               .

4.  JUDGING AND ORAL PRESENTATION DEMONSTRATING  KNOWLEDGE  OF THE PROJECT
