Objective: To motivate students to think like mathematicians while interacting in the classroom math centers and in real world situations.  This lesson is designed to awaken the mathematician within the student.

4 - 6B  Start the lesson with this riddles.  What does it take to make a whole pizza?  Answer: Common pieces.  Explanation" when adding fractions you must have common denominators.

Adding Fractions With
 Common Denominators

This lesson plan corresponds to Specific Curriculum Outcome:
Grade 4: B6

Objectives:
The students will use models informally to add simple fractions with common denominators.  

Materials:
Square tiles, pattern blocks, drawing paper, rulers, coloring pencils

Procedure:
By constructing symmetric shapes with smaller and congruent pieces, the students will learn to add fractions with the same denominators.  They will also learn to equate certain fractions with others that have different denominators. 

  1. Draw a pizza on the board and divide it into halves.  Ask the students how many pizzas there are on the board.  Ask them how many halves there are in one pizza.   
  2. In groups of 2 or 3, the students will create symmetric shapes with square blocks. Circulate, using the shapes they have created to ask, for example, how many quarters there are in one half, etc.   
  3. The students will continue the activity with pattern blocks.  With these blocks, they may create symmetric shapes other than rectangles or squares.  
    Circulate as before.  
  4. Each student will divide a piece of drawing paper into 8 sections and color it as follows: 
    - 3/8 in 1 color
    - 1/4 in another color
    - each of the remaining eighths in different colors
    5.

Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated on their class work and on a quiz.
