Objectives:

To assess 4th grade students' ability to distinguish
between an insect and a spider by building a model(s)
in accordance with state goals 1 and 2.

Materials Needed:

2"x1"x1" length of clay per child
2 toothpicks ............ " "
8 4" pipecleaner lengths " "
1 scissors................." "
1 6"x6" construction paper " "
1 locking plastic bag for above per child

Strategy:

Give each child a bag of the above materials and a
20 minute time limit to construct a spider or an insect
in silence.

Performance Assessment:

An insect has 6 legs at 1 point each.............................6 points
3 body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), at 3 points each...........9 "
2,4, or no wings.................................................3 "
