The Process Modeling, Monitoring, and Control Research Group at IIT is directed by Professor Ali Cinar and is comprised of faculty and graduate students who are doing state of the art research in the field of systems theory, modeling, and control. Collaborative projects in polymer reaction engineering, pharmaceuticals, food processing, medicine, and biotechnology provide opportunities to test and enhance the methodologies developed.

Process Modeling, Monitoring and Control Research Group

The Group's research focuses on the development of methods and tools for empirical modeling, monitoring and control for multivariable processes and their applications to manufacturing operations. Statistical and empirical models are used in the design of advanced control techniques for multivariable nonlinear processes, in statistical monitoring and diagnosis of batch and continuous processes and in the intelligent, fault-tolerant supervisory control of processes with real-time knowledge-based control systems.

PenSim: A Web Based Program for Dynamic Simulation of Fed Batch Penicillin Production

PenSim is a web-based simulator and runs on virtually all computer platforms.PenSim is a program for dynamic simulation of fed-batch penicillin production based on an unstructured model. PenSim is designed especially for student education (Birol et al. 2000a), for experts in biotech industry and researchers in control systems area. PenSim can be used for empirical model development developing model order reduction algorithms. Process database construction for developing statistical monitoring/control tools applying optimization algorithms implementation of different controller designs studying controller performance assessment. PenSim is an excellent tool for dynamic systems, control and biotechnology education. PenSim has a data output structure which can be used as an input in most of those post processing programs such as spreadsheet and graphics programs. Simulation results are plotted directly from the simulator (PenSim uses gnuplot package). Simulations can be performed by changing:

  • Initial conditions
  • Batch/fed-batch switching time

Glucosim

GlucoSim: A Web-Based Educational Simulation Package for Glucose-Insulin Levels in the Human Body

GlucoSim is a web-based simulator and runs on virtually all computer platforms. GlucoSim is a program for simulation of simulating glucose-insulin interaction in a healthy person and type-I diabetes mellitus patient. GlucoSim has a flexible data output structure which can be used as an input in most of those post processing programs such as spreadsheet and graphics programs. Simulation results can be plotted in 2D directly from the simulator by choosing appropriate buttons (GlucoSim uses gnuplot package). Simulations can be performed by changing:

  • Initial conditions
  • Meal and insulin injection times
