Dr. Xin Chen is a Senior Research
Scientist and a technical lead in the Research and Development Division of
Location and Commerce, NOKIA (formerly NAVTEQ), the world leader in premium
digital map, traffic and location data. Xin leads his
team in automation of next generation map making using computer vision, pattern
recognition, machine learning, and image processing technologies. He supervises
full time engineers, interns and teams of academic collaborators at
institutions such as Carnegie Mellon, University of Wisconsin at Madison, University
of Notre Dame and Columbia University.
He manages several initiatives to evaluate technology and corporations
to determine their value and he has experience pitching and performing
government-funded research involving various aspects of 3D Mapping, Automatic
Target Recognition and biometrics-related projects. Xin’s current work
at NAVTEQ focuses on automatic creation of 3D visual products. During his time
at NAVTEQ, he has been awarded 1 U.S Patent, 20 invention development awards
and 2010 and 2011 IMPACT awards to recognize “employees making outstanding
contributions”.
Xin currently teaches a “Geospatial Vision and
Visualization” and a “Biometrics” course at the undergraduate and graduate
levels as an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department of the
Illinois Institute of Technology and in the Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science Department of Northwestern University.
He is also a Ph.D. advisor at IIT. Xin has
been invited to speak on next generation map making technologies at various
top-notch U.S. universities. He has
numerous publications in pattern recognition, GIS, computer vision and
multimedia and has patents pending. Xin has served as a program chair and on the committee for
several international conferences and workshops.
