Project Description:

The project is located on the southeast side of Chicago in an industrialized part of the
Hegewisch community. The project objective is to eliminate the at-grade crossings of the
Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks with 130th Street and Torrence Avenue by constructing
bridges for Norfolk Southern. This work will be accomplished by realigning and lowering 130th Street, Brainard Avenue, and Torrence Avenue so they fit under the new bridges proposed for the Norfolk Southern. The realignment of 130th Street and Brainard Avenue to form a continuous roadway will also eliminate a signalized intersection and a significant turning movement. Major components of the improvement include new pavement; new roadway, railroad and pedestrian bridges; retaining walls; a new drainage system for the road with new pump station; lighting; traffic signal replacement; a mixed use path along 130th Street for pedestrians and bicyclists; and new landscaping.
