Dr. Frames 3DIO

This site provides examples, tutorials, and additional tools for using Dr. Frame3D, a component in a suite of tools available for simple structural analysis. The intent is to assist the integration of this tool into an academic architectural studio course, specifically those within the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture curriculum.
Most architecture students have [or are rapidly acquiring] experience with digital modeling in CAD, most frequently with AutoCAD or 3D Studio. To leverage 1.) the skills of the students and 2.) the powerful modeling capacity of those programs, a translator has been developed - 3DIO - for use with DXF files and Dr. Frame3D.

sunlightStudy

This is the homesite for an effort to develop a suite of design tools dealing with sunlight. Understanding form and the shadows they cast are critical to the evaluation of the built environment. Current tools for evaluating shadows are generally based on an image based, single sample, analysis. I am interested in developing a suite of tools which work with existing modelling software to enhace the understanding of form, shadow, shading, daylighting, and solar insolation. They should work within the modelling/design environment to and provide real time feedback on the impact of design decisions. This site documents my current progress toward that goal, a proof of concept analysis illustrating that such capacity would have value.

imageDXF

This application is designed to produce a DXF file from a source image. The DXF consists of 'pixel' blocks which are scaled based upon the value of a source image pixel, these blocks can be redefined in CAD packages such as AutoCAD. The application interface provides control for image pixelation and DXF output including pixel count for image width and height axes, overall output dimensions [inches], pixel grid dimensions [inches] for width and height axes, and minimum spacing between output pixels[inches]. As one manipulates the controls, visual feedback is provided in a variety of forms including: simply viewing the source image, a pixelated version of source image, the pixelated version of source image with DXF overlay, and black and white DXF output. The application, sample source images, and sample output files can be downloaded in a zip file. To use the application, you must have the .NETFramework V1.1 [or later] installed on your computer. GCodeApplication

This download contains an executable for use with GCode produced for the Bridgeport Boss mill at IIT, Department of Architecture. This software checks for, and adds if necessary, an end of file control character used by DOS and software that was developed during its reign. Software such as the CNC tools used with this particular milling machine. Please send any bug reports, including source files if possible, to the address found under 'About' in the application.
